18 Things I Learned in 2018

I’ll start by admitting that this post is unapologetically self-serving. I have a faulty memory, so it’s necessary for me to write things down as part of my digital time capsule.

Normally, it would thrill me to compile a list of things I did or accomplished in a year’s time. But not in 2018. The last 365 days were filled with settling into “real” adulthood. (Only 15 years after I legally became an adult.) I suddenly gravitate toward adulty things. This year I’m writing a list of things I learned about myself, about life, and about adulthood.

18 THINGS I LEARNED IN 2018

1. I like podcasts. And NYT’s The Daily is my favorite.

2. I’m infatuated with world news. In my role as an entertainment news blogger I rarely have time to consume news outside of the all-consuming entertainment industry. It turns out that political news is JUST as scandalous as pop culture.

3. I learned how to fight with my boyfriend. What I mean is, I’ve realized that no relationship is perfect and that’s okay. When done right, fighting leads to greater understanding.

4. The Irish are just lovely. I traveled to Ireland for the first time for a wedding and completed a perfect 10-Day road trip.

5. I’m bad@ss at Integrated Marketing.

6. Companies die, just like people. This year Defy Media (Clevver’s parent company) shut down abruptly in 1 day, laying off hundreds of employees and disappointing MILLIONS of fans. RIP Clevver. (For now!)

7. Comic Con is still fun. This year I headed to my 6th Comic Con and managed to talk to Tom Felton about Drake’s “In My Feelings” and sing karaoke on a double decker bus with celebs from SyFy.

8. Lasik eye surgery is not fun. I took the plunge and got laser eye surgery and frankly didn’t have a great experience. (See my blog post!)

9. Putting in an offer to buy a home, doesn’t mean that you’ll get to live in it. I got my sh*t together this year and got prequalified to buy a home. I even put in an offer on a home, but learned shortly after that I was outbid. So the search continues.

10. Parents don’t live forever. When parents start having more serious medical needs you realize there’s no time for petty family drama. Enjoy the precious time.

11. I heart The Rockies. Going to the mountains is one of my favorite things to do in Denver and I cherish every trip up i70.

12. You SHOULD keep the heater running when you go out of town in the winter. I started off the year with a flooded home, thanks to my boyfriend leaving the heater off during our holiday vacation. We came home to a shower pipe that had burst and it took us 10 months to get our house back to normal.

13. Santa Fe is fancy. My BF and I took a 5 hour road trip from Denver —> Santa Fe and experienced the eclectic art scene and foodie haven.

14. I’m a good(ish) cook. I got over a lot of my bashfulness in the kitchen this year.

15. I’m obsessed with plants. I love all my plantbabies. And I have a lot.

16. I CAN still handle Vegas. Relived my 20’s in June for a friend’s birthday and I even danced on a couch at a club.

17. I like sports! Well, kinda. I went to my first NFL game ever (Broncos vs Browns) and loved the experience.

18. Positivity is key. Life is weird, and everyone is going through stuff. So do what you can to make every day a little less painful. 🔑

If you’re reading this, I’d love to hear from you. What did you think of my list? Super lame, or so true?
