Where Did the Word Ratchet Come From?

Where Did the Word Ratchet Come From?

Let’s explore.

No, I don’t think it’s a play off the word “wretched”.

Back in 1975 Nurse Ratched was a love-to-hate character in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

She was so loathed that kids in high school started to call girls that acted bitchy “Nurse Ratched”.

Fast forward to the 90’s when Louisiana rapper Dr. Mandigo put out a local hit called “Do Da Ratchet”.

Then in the 2000’s the “Do Da Ratchet” song made a comeback being covered by rapper Lil Boosie.

I’m not sure what came first: the song or the dance.

But Do Da Ratchet was also a Southern dance craze.

In 2012, LLCOOJ got in on the “Ratchet” song fun with his own take on the word. Which was criticized as one of the worst songs of 2012.

In 2015, the likes of Miley Cyrus made RATCHET a pop culture slang phenomenon.

The word has since taken on several different meanings:

-A golddigger

-A slutty female

-A twerking ghetto ho

-A diva who’s not really a diva

Update: The self-proclaimed “ratchet king,” Lava House’s Anthony Mandigo is currently serving a life sentence in the Louisiana State Penitentiary on drug charges.
